The Story
I got my start in real estate after a very rewarding yet physically draining career as a high school and middle school language arts teacher. At its best, real estate is very much like teaching – providing a depth and breadth of important practical knowledge, strategizing an approach that ensures the greatest chances of success, and becoming a source of emotional support to people making very important life decisions. I love it...when that can be the focus of my work.
The first real estate firm I worked for attempted to “train” me by encouraging cold calling, social networking to the point where I could confidently hand out my business cards to strangers in grocery stores, and checking in with friends and acquaintances on a regular basis to remind them that I was a licensed real estate agent relying on their referrals to make a living.
I was the only guy in my training group to raise his hand and ask if that might be annoying to people. After side-eyeing each other, the manager and her fellow trainers encouraged me to change that mindset quickly. Afterall, 99 doors slamming in your face is worth the one door that leads you to a commission. But I had trouble accepting that I would have to annoy 99 others to get there.
They provided me scripts so I would always have the right thing to say to initiate conversation and in response to any objection. Those words never felt natural or genuine.
I soon found another real estate firm with a completely different business model and the fit was comfortable and fruitful (I closed nearly 300 deals in less than nine years!)...until it wasn’t.
This company valued customer service over making a buck...until shareholders started complaining about profits and stock prices. They let me be me and approach my business the way I felt was best...until they started to believe that AI-generated statements and scripts were more profitable methods of communicating with clients. They used to give me the freedom to refer more than one mortgage or escrow service so my clients could make informed and economically-sound decisions based on comparison...until they started offering these services themselves and demanded that their products were the only products worth recommending. They used to put what the customer wanted first, allowing buyers to tour for as long they wanted to make sure they found the right home...until the slowing of the market made them panic and encourage more high-pressure tactics to get buyers to come to a decision more quickly.
Needless to say, it’s no longer the company I once worked for and that’s why I left.
I founded C-Sharp Real Estate so I could be myself again. I work with clients who appreciate this approach, who don’t want to be sold anything, and who don’t want to be seen as just a means to a commission. I answer to no one so I can put my clients’ best interests first and serve them with integrity as well as the expertise of my ten years in the business.
